Born in Peterborough, Ontario, in 1901, Manly Palmer Hall moved to California as a teenager and began lecturing on comparative religion, mythology and esoteric philosophy in Los Angeles before he turned twenty. In 1928, at age twenty-seven, he published An Encyclopedic Outline of Masonic, Hermetic, Qabbalistic and Rosicrucian Symbolical Philosophy—universally known as The Secret Teachings of All Ages—and in 1934 he founded the Philosophical Research Society (PRS) in Los Angeles, where he delivered roughly eight thousand lectures before his death in 1990.
Hall’s life’s work was synthesis and preservation. Across The Secret Teachings of All Ages and later books on alchemy, tarot, astrology and Eastern and Western philosophy, he gathered emblems, parables and initiation myths from antiquity through the Renaissance, presenting them as facets of a single perennial quest for self-knowledge and ethical citizenship. His rare-book and manuscript collections—part of which later entered the Getty Research Institute—made the PRS a major crossroads for twentieth-century readers curious about Western esoteric traditions.
Appreciating Hall’s literary achievement requires distinguishing romantic esoteric synthesis from modern historical scholarship. The Secret Teachings of All Ages wove together Renaissance lore, nineteenth-century Masonic legends and Theosophical speculation as if Pythagoras, Egyptian priests, medieval alchemists and modern fraternal orders shared one continuous, unbroken secret doctrine. Contemporary historians of antiquity and esotericism read those connections as imaginative early-modern and Victorian reconstructions rather than documented ancient history.
Approached with that critical lens, Hall’s lectures and essays—especially shorter practical works such as Self-Unfoldment by Disciplines of Realization—offer a humane reminder that symbols and philosophies are valuable only insofar as they cultivate patience, moderation and responsibility in everyday conduct.
