Born in Laredo, Texas, in 1914, José Silva ran an electronics and radio repair business and studied psychology, hypnosis and electroencephalography (EEG) texts on his own before launching public seminars in 1966. Through the Silva Mind Control organization and his 1977 bestseller The Silva Mind Control Method (written with Philip Miele), Silva’s four-day courses reached millions of participants across the Americas and Europe before his death in 1999.
Silva’s curriculum combined straightforward relaxation and visualization routines with the biofeedback vocabulary of the 1960s and 1970s. Students learned to count backward from one hundred to one to enter a calm, eyes-closed state he called “going to level” (associated in his lectures with alpha brainwave rhythms), and to use structured mental-imagery frames such as the “Mirror of the Mind”—picturing a current problem inside a dark frame, then shifting the mental screen to the left and visualizing a constructive resolution inside a white frame.
The final module of Silva’s course, however, crossed from relaxation and problem-solving rehearsal into parapsychology. Silva claimed that deeper mental levels trained students in “effective sensory projection”—clairvoyance, telepathy and inspecting the internal organs of distant strangers to detect illness. Decades of scientific evaluation of parapsychology have found no replicable evidence for extrasensory perception or remote medical inspection, and presenting relaxation imagery as a psychic medical-inspection tool is both unfounded and unsafe.
When the paranormal claims are stripped away, Silva’s basic exercises are variations on progressive relaxation and structured mental rehearsal. Using a quiet countdown to settle physical tension and picturing a practical next step on a mental screen can help organize attention before a task, without attributing psychic powers to an ordinary state of calm focus.
