Born in 1947, Michael Alan Singer completed a master’s degree in economics at the University of Florida in 1971 and was working toward a doctorate when an unexpected period of quiet self-observation led him to retreat to wooded land near Alachua, Florida. In 1975 he founded the Temple of the Universe, an interfaith yoga and meditation centre, and published The Search for Truth. Over the next two decades he also built Medical Manager Corporation, a physician-office software business that went public in 1997 and merged into WebMD in 2000, before reaching a vast popular readership with The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself (2007), The Surrender Experiment (2015) and Living Untethered (2022).

The opening chapters of The Untethered Soul introduce one of contemporary self-help’s clearest metaphors for attentional distance: personifying the restless inner monologue as an anxious roommate sitting on your sofa, arguing both sides of every decision and forecasting disasters that never arrive. Drawing on classical yoga philosophy and witness-consciousness teachings, Singer invites readers to step back from the roommate’s commentary, relax the somatic contraction that accompanies minor daily frustrations, and allow uncomfortable feelings to pass through awareness without building a defensive life around them.

Where readers need discernment is in separating that practical attentional skill from the sweeping cosmic conclusions of The Surrender Experiment. In his memoir, Singer describes a personal vow to stop following his preferences and say yes to whatever opportunities arrived, attributing the growth of a billion-dollar software enterprise and his eventual navigation of a federal regulatory investigation to "life’s perfection." A survivor’s retrospective narrative is not evidence that passive acquiescence guarantees worldly protection, and advice to "let go" or "surrender" must never be used to counsel staying in unsafe relationships, ignoring legal or ethical duties, or declining professional mental-health care.

Kept on the ground of everyday attention, Singer’s "inner roommate" question remains immediately clarifying: if the voice in your head were an actual person sitting beside you repeating the same complaint for the twentieth time today, would you keep taking its advice as objective truth?
