Born in Melbourne in 1951, Rhonda Byrne worked as an Australian radio and television producer before releasing the 2006 documentary film and companion book The Secret. Crediting a reading of Wallace D. Wattles’s 1910 book The Science of Getting Rich with inspiring her project, Byrne assembled contemporary self-help speakers, dramatic re-enactments and aphorisms from Charles F. Haanel, Prentice Mulford and Robert Collier into a fast-paced media package that sold tens of millions of copies worldwide.

The Secret presents the “law of attraction” as an impersonal, universal law operating on the principle that “like attracts like.” According to Byrne’s three-step formula—ask, believe, receive—every thought and feeling emits a frequency that draws matching financial, relational, material and bodily conditions back to the thinker. Visualization boards, gratitude lists and present-tense scripting are framed in the book not as habits for organizing attention, but as direct transmissions to a compliant universe.

The cultural reach of The Secret is undeniable, yet its central causal promises are unsupported. Thoughts do not broadcast magnetic frequencies that summon cheques, parking spaces or physical health, and claiming that every misfortune or illness is attracted by the person experiencing it confuses inner mood with external causation. Critics across psychology, medicine, ethics and religious history have pointed out that this framework erases structural reality, invites magical thinking and places blame on people facing hardship.

Understanding The Secret as a twenty-first-century remix of century-old New Thought texts helps strip away its aura of hidden revelation. What remains useful to an ordinary practitioner is simply the habit of noticing what you are asking for and whether your daily actions align with it—holding gratitude and clarity of aim as ways to steady your own conduct rather than levers that command the world.
