Law of Attraction
The New Thought claim that sustained thoughts and feelings draw corresponding circumstances into a person's life.
- Beliefs
The Law of Attraction is the claim that like attracts like: sustained thought and feeling are said to draw matching circumstances into a person's life. Versions of the idea appear in New Thought writing and have been repeatedly repackaged in popular books, films, and online communities.
It is not a law in the scientific sense, and there is no good basis for saying a person's thoughts select events for them. Its harshest reading can turn illness, poverty, loss, or another person's harm into a moral failure of attention. That is both unsupported and needlessly cruel.
Omzoe discusses the Law of Attraction as a cultural tradition rather than a mechanism. It can still be useful to ask what a hoped-for outcome directs you to notice or do, while keeping chance, context, and other people fully in view.
