Born in New Delhi in 1946 and educated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Deepak Chopra immigrated to the United States in 1970, where he practiced internal medicine and endocrinology in the Boston area. In 1985 he met Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and helped promote Maharishi Ayurveda in North America before striking out independently in the early 1990s. With Ageless Body, Timeless Mind (1993) and The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success (1994)—amplified by appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and the founding of the Chopra Center in California with David Simon in 1996—Chopra became one of the most commercially successful voices in contemporary mind-body publishing.
Across more than ninety books, Chopra combines concepts drawn from Advaita Vedanta and traditional Indian Ayurveda with vocabulary borrowed from modern physics and biology. In The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, he presents daily quiet contemplation, generosity, non-resistance, clear intention combined with detachment from rigid outcomes, and service-oriented purpose (dharma) as principles for living with less friction.
What has drawn sustained criticism from physicists, evolutionary biologists and medical researchers is Chopra’s habit of using technical terms from quantum mechanics and genetics as literal explanations for how human consciousness supposedly alters physiology, ageing or external events. Subatomic phenomena do not demonstrate that thoughts direct biological senescence or guarantee material prosperity, and blending contemplative metaphor with clinical language risks blurring the boundary between reflective well-being practices and clinical medicine. Meditation and lifestyle habits can support rest and perspective, but they never replace qualified medical evaluation or care.
Set apart from speculative quantum analogies, the enduring thread in The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success is a classical Indian ethical reminder: pair clear daily intention with genuine detachment from how every detail must unfold, so that effort does not curdle into anxious control.
