Born in Kansas in 1956, Pam Grout worked for decades as a freelance journalist, travel writer and author of books on creativity and everyday adventure before publishing E-Squared: Nine Do-It-Yourself Energy Experiments That Prove Your Thoughts Create Your Reality with Hay House in 2013. Written in a brisk, humorous tone, the book and its 2014 sequel E-Cubed reached the top of advice bestseller lists by turning abstract New Thought claims into forty-eight-hour assignments with lab-report worksheets.

Each chapter in E-Squared invites the reader to test a specific hypothesis—such as asking an unseen “field of potentiality” for an unexpected gift within two days, watching for a specific colour of car or yellow butterfly, or directing kind intentions toward someone—and to record the outcome. Grout frames these exercises in the language of quantum physics and zero-point energy, asserting that human expectation directly reorganizes physical matter and external events.

In reality, the exercises demonstrate selective attention and perceptual priming, not paranormal causation or quantum mechanics. When a person decides to look for green cars, butterflies or small moments of generosity over forty-eight hours, they notice details they previously filtered out and behave more openly toward the people around them. An informal two-day observation with no control group, where almost any pleasant coincidence counts as a hit, cannot establish that thoughts alter physical reality.

Read instead as playful exercises in attention, Grout’s prompts offer a lively way to see how strongly expectation filters what you notice in an ordinary week. Deliberately looking for opportunities to act generously or spotting resources you normally walk past can refresh a stale routine, without mistaking selective perception for a supernatural force.
