Born in Ireland in 1898, Joseph Murphy moved to the United States in the 1920s and spent decades lecturing and ministering within the Divine Science and Religious Science streams of American New Thought before his death in 1981. His 1963 book The Power of Your Subconscious Mind became one of the bestselling self-help titles of the twentieth century, translating church-based metaphysical teaching into an accessible idiom of mental laws, bedtime imagery and spoken suggestion.
Murphy’s core model divides mental life into two spheres: an active, choosing consciousness and a receptive subconscious that accepts habitual premises and acts upon them. Drawing on biblical allegory alongside earlier New Thought writers such as Ernest Holmes and Thomas Troward, he taught that repeated prayer, calm expectation and pre-sleep imagery impress directives upon the deeper mind. Within his system, the subconscious is presented not merely as memory and habit, but as a channel connected to universal intelligence capable of arranging health, wealth and external circumstance.
That slide from psychological observation into external causation is where a careful reader must draw a line. While Murphy’s books are filled with dramatic anecdotes of financial windfalls and physical recovery following spoken formulas, those stories are pastoral illustrations from his lectures rather than controlled evidence. Calling a religious metaphysics a law of mind does not establish that private belief commands biology, other people’s choices or economic conditions, nor can bedtime affirmation replace medical or professional care.
What remains durable in Murphy’s writing is narrower and closer to ordinary reflection: noticing the quiet assumptions you rehearse when your guard is down. Paying attention to the sentences you repeat before sleep or under stress can clarify which expectations are shaping your daily conduct, without asking the subconscious mind to govern events outside your reach.
