Born in New York in 1979, Gabrielle Bernstein worked in nightclub promotion and public relations before entering recovery in her mid-twenties and turning toward spiritual self-help writing. Drawing heavily on Marianne Williamson’s reading of A Course in Miracles, Wayne Dyer’s lectures, Kundalini-style meditation and later psychological frameworks, she published a string of bestsellers—including May Cause Miracles (2013), The Universe Has Your Back (2016) and Super Attractor (2019)—tailored to social media, podcasts and subscription apps.
Bernstein’s work repackages twentieth-century New Thought and Course in Miracles concepts into conversational steps for millennial and Gen-Z audiences: noticing fearful control, repeating short mantras, asking for “signs” and practicing what she calls “surrender” to a supportive universe. In books like Super Attractor, she blends daily meditation and gratitude journaling with law-of-attraction claims that aligning one’s energy with joy draws desired opportunities and synchronicities into view.
The appeal of her format lies in its candour about everyday overwhelm, yet the same blend of confessional storytelling and manifestation promises calls for discernment. Framing the universe as an intentional agent that arranges outcomes when a reader surrenders control is an article of personal faith, not an empirical mechanism. Likewise, interpreting ordinary coincidences as metaphysical validation can encourage people to outsource difficult decisions to chance rather than weighing practical evidence.
What remains serviceable in Bernstein’s writing is the simpler habit of pausing when anxious micromanagement takes over. Recognising the difference between what is within your power to prepare today and what lies outside your control can lower unnecessary tension, without expecting the universe to deliver a promised result.
