Born in Los Angeles in 1956, Michael Bernard Beckwith trained within the Religious Science tradition founded by Ernest Holmes and established the Agape International Spiritual Center in 1986. Over the following decades, Agape grew into a large trans-denominational congregation combining New Thought theology, gospel music, contemplative practice and local humanitarian outreach, while Beckwith’s books—including Spiritual Liberation (2008) and Life Visioning—and media appearances brought his voice to a wider public.

Beckwith is best known for teaching what he calls the “Life Visioning Process,” which he distinguishes from conventional visualization. Rather than beginning with a fixed list of personal demands and trying to force their arrival, his method asks practitioners to quiet the mind through meditation and ask what calling or capacity is seeking expression through their life. He maps spiritual development across four stages—from feeling at the mercy of events, to deliberate goal-setting, to receptive service, to contemplative unity—framing the shift as a religious maturation rather than a technique for acquiring goods.

Because Beckwith also appeared in The Secret (2006) and shares platforms with law-of-attraction teachers, popular summaries sometimes flatten his ministerial vocabulary into a promise of causal manifestation. Even within his more nuanced four-stage model, claims about aligning with cosmic frequencies or spiritual law belong to New Thought theology, not empirical psychology. Religious aspiration can inspire generosity and civic service, but it does not operate as a physical mechanism that ensures outcomes.

What translates outside a congregation is the contrast Beckwith draws between grasping at an image and asking what kind of contribution a situation calls for. Pausing before setting a goal to ask what values and responsibilities you want to serve can steady a long-term commitment, without turning spiritual reflection into a causal law.
